Con Constantine Takes Me To The Movies
The Newcastle Jets are the only team in the A-League to have a sole owner. Multi-Millionaire (who would've thought Newcastle had one of them!!) Con Constantine is well...not respected...not revered...let's go with well known in sports circles in Newcastle. He has a lot of money he likes to through about. At one point he was trying to buy the Newcastle Knights (So the fact that the Jets seem to be his 'second choice' worries me).
Con is more than happy to boast about the $12 million or so he has personally put into the Jets, then in the same breath proclaim that the despite this the Jets are "the people of Newcastle's team". While Con has been generous with his spare change, his choice of upper management staff has been a sore point for many fans. I don't like my team having a sole owner. Ultimatley I would prefer a fan owned team like that one in England where the fans put together a consortium and bought their team when they were going under (trandals may be able to tell us which one that was). Either that, or I'd like to own them. So I've never been a great fan of Con. Until...
After our game against Perth (a crushing last second loss - Dutchy's first and only loss) there was a competition on the Jets website offering one of 20 double passes to the Jets' screening of Charlotte's Web. Finally! Con giving something back to the fans! I am not one to knock back something free. Particularly if all that free thing involved was me sending an email with my name, address and the answer to the question: "who scored the goal for the Jets against Perth?". I sent the email and thought nothing of it. The only thing I have ever won was a raffle of which I was drawing whilst very drunk MC'ing at a fund raising event. I still stand by my statement that it was entirely luck that I drew the one ticket that I had bought first.
In the mail on Monday was not the normal windowed envelopes from Centerlink, debt collectors or a utility company, but one with the Jets symbol in the top left-hand corner. Lo and behold inside was a double pass to the screening of Charlotte's Web. This almost makes up for the fact that I have had to pay an extra $5 for my tickets to the home games this season because apparently an unemployment concession card isn't good enough at Energy Australia Stadium. Hopefully Con is there so I can get in his ear about that.
Now begs the question: who do I take? Seeing the only other two members of this community either live in England or Sydney (and a Syd FC supporter to boot!) I can hardly offer the place to you (although I am offering it nonetheless). So do I take one of my friends that I secretly hold affection for? Or do I take my friend that I watch the Jets games with? Or do I take my flatmate that I have been occasionally sleeping with? Or do I take my friend's nephew who is a Jets fan? It seems Con's gift has brought more worry than jubilation. Thanks Con!
